A Gatherette for the Ghastlies

When elizabethdavid does dinner, culinary stops are pulled out. The art of course is to make it seem effortless, yet the truffle CAKElets alone had been days in the making, as fine layer was added to layer...

On Saturday Mr and Mrs GhastlyOzi, passing through from Melbourne, got the full treatment - fêted at an unforgettable dîner d'honneur, laid on for them, and the whole of the QCC.

Pre-dinner drinks at The Woolpack in Slad, Laurie Lee's local. Tonight Dennis Gould (honorary member of the QCC, recipient of BSB soxies, a PP d'oiley and an FF copy of The Guernsey Literary book) also happened to be there. Black Sheep was off, so it had to be Uley Old Spot. What more Glarstershire Cartswolds than that?

Later, a view of Rosebank Cottage, the T-shaped house where the Lee family crammed into the downstroke, and a nod to Laurie's grave...

...then it was all back to ed's for the full works.

Take a look at the menu. Enlarge it on your screen. Even the whitebait was served in barquettes that referenced lidell's pirate ship!

I'm no food-writer so you'll just have to imagine the apparent ease, the elegance, the exquisite understated style, disons panache,  with which each delicious plat was served...

Utter brilliance.

A night indeed to remember; and to go down in the annals of The QCC.

ed, nous te saluons!
